Load shedding is something which is implemented equitably in order to ensure the fair rotation of load which shedds to all customers throughout the day. When we talk about ekurhuleni load shedding it basically sheds those areas that are supplied by the municipality. Those are the ones which are Ekso which mainly refers to the load shedding schedules for all the stages.

There are mainly three stages, the load shedding ekurhuleni helps to avoid customers from being affected at the same time of the day when the shedding is implemented.

Distinguishing Between Different Stages of Ekurhuleni Load shedding Schedule!

Stage 1: It is mainly implemented when the Eksom used to request for the shedding that ranges from 10MW to 300MW. This particular stage area is used to affect divide equal of two parts into load sizes in order to accomodate the load reduction needs.

Considering the metro scheduling the ekurhuleni load shedding schedule has built eight areas in a block to be affected. The four of the eight areas may be affected on day 1 and the other remaining four will be affected on day 2. At the time of stage 2 is declared, with metro schedules are implemented in full. If there are eight areas in a block to be affected areas, all eight areas will be affected accordingly. When the grid is under severe pressure, stage 3 is implemented.

Stage 2: It is considered to be completely out of the metro’s control and is implemented by Eskom to protect the national grid from collapsing and avoid a blackout. Due to the sudden loss of generation capacity, ekurhuleni load shedding seldom received an early notification for the implementation, this might depend on the emergency of the situation.

Talking broadly about the municipality it does not shed industrial areas during the time of shedding load with stage 1 and stage 2, hence areas that tend to fall under an industrial area do not appear on the metro’s schedule. A residential area does not appear on the schedule, if any sort of event is going on, the residents are encouraged to inform the municipality if any  error on the schedule persists. An investigation will then be carried out and the areas that are supplied by the municipality will be included on the schedule.

It is important to note that it only takes control of the metro’s load shedding at stage 3, according to the advertised schedules.

There are events when Eskom experiences technical challenges with their remote links to in order to restore the powers.

Stage 3: This stage is divided into number of blocks particularly for seven days of the week. Through this, ekurhuleni load shedding covers the area under blocks of 17, 18, 19 and 20 in a form that indicates for the load shedding schedule. Customers are mainly encouraged to go through the four blocks for a reason, to identify under which block their areas fall, including the time they will experience load shedding.

Residents are often asked to read the schedule as follows:

  • Day of the week,
  • Block number
  • Time of the day.

Stage 4: Lastly, shedding this, one needs to shed at least 4000MW to keep the national grid far from collapsing. This stage is considered to be as bad as it gets into the terms of shedding, starting with the unscheduled power cuts and outside of schedule whenever it is required. This means that your area must be hit by blackouts at any time without any warning. Stage 4 load shedding is typically the final option for Eskom to prevent a national blackout. Over time, the load shedding stages have been amended to create less impact for various users.
